P7 - Wed 30 January 2013

Literacy - MEDIA Studies

Reading

We are continuing our study of newspapers. The format will continue as per last weeks homework, reading at least 5 articles from a newspaper and reporting back to your group.

To support your journalistic role it would be advantageous to select articles which support the area you have been tasked to complete in the creation of the newspaper at the end of the week.

See previous blog messages to remind you of points to report back on.

At least one of the articles should be where the journalist is providing an OPINION on a news item. Highlight key sentences which are the writers or others opinion.

Writing - Magazine Article

You are going to plan a magazine article on ‘Food Packaging.” Think about what is wrong with some food packaging. Think of some arguments you might put to food manufacturers and express your objections. Brainstorm sections for your article. E.g

  • An introductory paragraph
  • What is over packaging?
  • Why is it a problem?
  • Why do food manufacturer do it?
  • Examples of over packaging
  • Examples of sensible packaging
  • What can you do?

Make brief notes against each sub heading. Think of a good headline for the article, using alliteration, rhyme or punning?

Reading

During this term we will be studying newspapers. You will be expected to read at least 1 article from a newspaper on a daily basis and report back to your group. Minimum of 5 articles to share with the class.

It would be a good idea to use a highlighter to mark points of interest you want to report back on.

For instance you should identify:
  • Vocabulary - which you think is interesting or maybe you do not understand.
  • Connectives.
  • Openers.
  • Punctuation.
  • Is it FACT or OPINION?
  • Any interesting techniques in the 'headline' eg alliteration, rhyming.
  • Could you think of a better headline.
  • Why you selected this particular article.

In addition one of your newspaper reports should be on an article where you can highlight the following features found in many newspaper articles:

  • When
  • What
  • Who
  • Where
  • What happened
  • Then what happened
  • Eye witness
  • Conclusion

If you do not get a daily paper, you will be able to take home some pages from school or you could view some on-line papers and print off the article to bring into school.
